(Currently closed to the public)

The Wheatsheaf is not famous for being a haunted location. However, many of the staff that have worked and lived there have experienced strange happenings.

The place certainly has a strange feeling if you happen to be there on your own (especially at night). The feeling of being watched or catching a glimpse of a figure out of the corner of your eye is not uncommon.

Recently the pub closed due to the brewery hiking up the rent costs.

I have no information relating to who, what or why the Wheatsheaf maybe being haunted so this is a little bit of an experiment entry to see if any of the locals can shed any light or offer any explanations.

The Wheatsheaf has been around for many years so it maybe these guys in the picture below simply visiting for a few scoops!

The Wem Ghost Photo or Fire Girl Ghost Photo is one of histories most famous ghost photo’s an has now been proven to be fake.

Here’s the original Wem Ghost Photo and the story behind it.

The Wem Ghost Photo

Wem Town Hall in England caught on fire in November 1995. The fire raged through the night and as firemen battled the flames, a local decided to snap some pictures. In one of his photos there appears to be the clear image of a girl standing in front of the fire.

No one remembered a young girl being at the scene and there was definitely not a young girl in the building. Some believe this is the ghost of a girl called Jane Churm who accidentally started a fire that destroyed many homes in the town in 1667. Jane also died in the fire.

However, a local named Brian Lear discovered a post card which bears a striking resemblance to the girl in the photo. Here’s the post card.

Wem Ghost Photo Post Card

At first glance you might think that is simply another girl wearing similar clothes. So I took both images placed them on top of each other and faded through one image to the other. Take a look at the video below. To me this is proof that the girl is in fact the same person and that the Wem ghost photo can now (unfortunately) we labelled a fake. But what do you think. Leave your comments below.

When it was developed there appeared an additional ghostly figure on the top row 4th from the left. Members of the squadron instantly recognised the figure as air mechanic Freddy Jackson. Freddy had recently died in an accident and his funeral was held just the day before this photo was taken.

The Ship & Royal was once a hotel and is now a public house. In 1978 the Blackpool Gazette featured a story of a ghost nicknamed “Charlie” but implies that the ghost is that of a local who liked to spend time at the inn called “John Talbot Clifton” who died in Tenerife 1928.

This spectre has been know to show himself on the second floor and has been blamed for moving paper work and placing orders for the business by telephone!

It is also believed that the spirit of a Mother and Daughter who both committed suicide by drowning themselves in one of the bathrooms at the beginning of the twentieth century. The upper floors of the building has twenty or so rooms which are closed to the public and despite no plumbing to these rooms running tap water is often heard.

The photo was taken by Captain Provand and Indre Shira in 1936. The photographers who were sent to photograph Raynham Hall for Country Life magazine. This is what happened, according to Shira:

“Captain Provand took one photograph while I flashed the light. He was focusing for another exposure; I was standing by his side just behind the camera with the flashlight pistol in my hand, looking directly up the staircase. All at once I detected an ethereal veiled form coming slowly down the stairs. Rather excitedly, I called out sharply: ‘Quick, quick, there’s something.’ I pressed the trigger of the flashlight pistol. After the flash and on closing the shutter, Captain Provand removed the focusing cloth from his head and turning to me said: ‘What’s all the excitement about?’”

However, what are your thoughts? Can this photo be explained in some iother way? Please leave your comments below.

Chingle Hall is reportedly Britain’s most haunted house and is also Britain’s oldest inhabited “Brick” house. I actually grew up very close to Chingle Hall and the place was surrounded with spooky childhood tales, so it made perfect sense to start my quest to catalog all of the UK’s most haunted locations right here.

If you have any information or tales relating to Chingle Hall please add them using the comments box below.

Chingle hall was built in 1260 by Adam de Singleton, at the time it was know as Singleton hall. Since then it has passed through various families including the Walls.

John Wall who was born in the Hall in the 17th century was hanged for heresy in 1679. His head was taken to France but is believed to have been brought back and buried in the grounds.

It is said that if his head is found that the hauntings will stop.

Chingle Hall Hauntings

The room considered to be most haunted is Eleanor’s room which belonged to Eleanor Singleton. Reportedly she was kept captive there for 12 years and was murdered there at the age of 20. Visitors experience a feeling of sadness in this room and some also smell lavende. On some occasions visitors have felt tugs at their clothing and some have even fainted.

During January of 1996 the Northern Anomalies Research Organisation investigated Chingle Hall. During the visit a member of the group captured two photographs of a blue light which appeared near the ceiling. The light was witnessed by a several people in the house. Tape recorders were used in an investigation and sounds were heard within the Priest’s Room.

The sound of bricks being moved was heard by a visitor in the priest’s room in 1985. The sound originated in the priest’s hiding hole and on investigation the visitor saw part of a hand moving one of the bricks. As he watched, the hand disappeared. Later bricks were found on the chapel floor.

Inside the Chapel there are also number of wooden beams running across the ceiling. The beams have strange symbols on them and when scientifically examined, they were found to have a high salt content, and to be much older than the house. In the 1970′s one of the beams spontaneously caught fire and just as quickly as it had started it inexplicably extinguished itself.
